Archaeology Library

The Archaeology Library (BA) inherited its funds from the Portuguese Institute of Archaeology which, in turn, originated from the German Institute of Archaeology that was given as a public loan to the Portuguese Government when its delegation in Lisbon closed in 1999.

Main themes and target users

The library specialises in different archaeological areas, its main target users being researchers, teachers, graduate and under-graduate students and archaeological professionals. 

Holdings

There is a total of about 55.000 bibliographic records, of which 1400 periodicals (half of which are active and updated), about 23.000 analytical titles and about 30.000 monographic titles.

Conditions of access and use

The BA is a public library open to all users above 16 years of age.
There are no borrowing privileges, though staff and collaborators may use library books in their offices.
Portable computers may be used, though there is no Internet access, not even wireless.
Users (both staff and outsiders) are requested to sign the presence book, even if they do not use the data base, any reading facilities or make any specific request.
As it is an indirect access library, users are requested to complete the request form with up to 12 books per day. Books are to be requested up to 30 minutes before the library closes.
Computers available at the library are only to be used for searching the library catalogue.
Photocopies may be taken in compliance with the Code on Copyright and Related Rights. Books published before 1900 or in a bad state of conservation may not be photocopied. Users are requested to make their own photocopies (only A4 format) by using a prepaid card.

For photographing any publications, you will need to get special permission from the library coordinator. Photos can only be used for studying purposes; for any other use, you will have to get permission from its author/editor.
Books should be handled carefully. No writing or tracing is allowed. Users are requested to inform librarians of any damage found (or inadvertently caused by them) on any publications handled so that measures can be taken accordingly.
After handling any publication, this should be placed on the stowage chart provided.
No mobile phones, food, drinks or smoking are allowed at the library premises.
