6th ATP - Seminary of Earthen Architecture in Portugal and the 9th SIACOT – Iberian American Seminar of Earthen Architecture and Construction

Universidade de Coimbra, CEAUCP

The CEAUCP - Centre of Archaeological Studies from the Universities of Coimbra and Oporto / FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology,
UC - University of Coimbra, ESG/Escola Superior Gallaecia, FCO/Foundation Convent of Orada, CdT/Association Centre of Earth and the
Iberian-American Network PROTERRA are the organizers and hosts of the 6th ATP - Seminary of Earthen Architecture in Portugal and the 9th
SIACOT – Iberian American Seminar of Earthen Architecture and Construction that will occur from the 20th to the 23rd of February 2010,
in Coimbra, Portugal.
Created in 2003, the seminar of Earthen Architecture in Portugal (ATP) has developed increasingly, with a wide participation of professionals,
researchers and academics. In 2003 and 2004, the 1stATP and the 2ndATP occurred in Lisbon; in 2005, the 3rd ATP congregates with the
4thSIACOT in Monsaraz; in 2006, the 4th ATP took place in Ouro Preto, Brazil (the 1st ACTB joined this 4th ATP, originating the EarthBrazil
2006); and in 2007 the 5th ATP took place in Aveiro. The seminar grows in dimension, in range and in increasing investigation, acquiring a
remarkable reach in the study and protection of the heritage, architecture, techniques, construction, conservation and in general research of
earthen architecture. The ATP seminar also encloses a wider internationalisation and interdisciplinary attribute between earthen architecture
and other fields of study, such as engineering, history, conservation, archaeology and anthropology. The quality of the papers, the general
public and scientific community's increasing interest sustain and denote the international magnitude and the Portuguese contribution for
the development of this scientific area.

Aims
To emphasise and to widen the disciplinary scope of earthen construction and heritage; To promote the debate and the transference of
knowledge, aiming at the stimulation and the accomplishment of common projects involving archaeology, architecture, engineering,
anthropology and other disciplines that find interest in this subject area.
To encourage the university contribution in the research sphere related to the construction and conservation of earthen architecture; to further
the improvement in the quality of the construction; to take part in the formation and subsequent preparation of technicians in the construction
and conservation of earthen architecture; to deepen and to contribute for the sustainable development at local and national scales; to
disseminate the earthen contemporary architecture, promoting the use of natural materials with larger energy efficiency, as well as strategies
for local training, with rising social integration.
